Who the 2024 MDE Rule Covers

The Department of Justice’s 2024 medical diagnostic equipment rule applies specifically to state and local government entities under ADA Title II, including covered public hospitals, clinics and health programs.

Private healthcare providers continue to have separate nondiscrimination and equal-access obligations under ADA Title III and other applicable laws.

Important Dates for Covered Public Entities

• After October 8, 2024: newly purchased, leased or otherwise acquired MDE generally must be accessible until the required amount is reached.
• By August 9, 2026: an entity that uses exam tables or weight scales must have at least one accessible exam table and at least one accessible weight scale, unless it already has them.
• Staff readiness: qualified staff must be able to operate accessible MDE and assist with transfers and positioning.
